For the past 8 months, volunteers from Beat This C.I.C have been working towards building the fair city of Peterborough’s first Creation Centre.
To realise and manifest our vision of bringing together the culturally rich and diverse community of Peterborough through music; to use the centre to make their own ideas and creations come to life, and their own dreams come true. The ethos behind it is simple: We will provide the space, you provide the ideas!
I personally think that the thing that hampers our progress in life is our seemingly innate ability to hold back, to keep things to ourselves and to refrain from sharing ideas with each other. I think that we are made to work together, to open out to each other and to share in each others ideas and creativity. We are increasingly moving towards a more open and transparent society.
Since founding Beat This in 2009 we had a studio/workshop space/arts centre in the back of our minds. We are lucky enough to a part of a creative collective in Peterborough who share that same dream. For the past 4 years Beat This have been taxi’ing it, train’ing it, and bus’ing it to youth centres, schools and community settings in Peterborough and beyond; to provide alternative, assistive music-based mentoring and workshops to children, young people and adults with additional needs. When the offer of a lease on a building came up in the spring of 2012, we literally jumped at the chance to take it on.
Bang, bosh, scrape, zzzzzzpt, and 8 months later, Chime Creation Centre was risen from the dust.
On 19th January 2013 we opened the doors to the good folk of Peterborough. Dozens and dozens braved the blizzard to come and see what all the arty types have been banging on about for the last 8 months.
There were a wide range of Assistive Music Technology devices and instruments for folks to get interactive with, a live Beat-box performance from the Vocalize Crew and musicians and non-musicians jammed for most of the day whilst we recorded it all live using the multitrack studio.
The opening of Chime was a celebration of the birth of something new, but now the real work begins: Convincing you, the community of Peterborough that this is your space to use. It’s just a shell, albeit a very pretty shell, for people to inhabit and use as their own creative vessel to make their ideas and inspirations come to life.
If you would like to run your own project at Chime, such as a Film Club, Yoga Class, Junk Music Workshop, Crafts sessions, any ideas you have, please put them forward to us so that we can make it happen.
