The Beat Orchestra project was originally launched in late 2012, working in partnership with other arts-based organisations including Vivacity, Orchestras Live, Britten Sinfonia and with support from Peterborough Music Partnership and The Arts Council England.
The aim was to create a large ensemble consisting of young people aged 12-19 from Peterborough (and the surrounding area) of different skill and ability. After promoting the project through schools, colleges etc, the Beat Orchestra (along with the partnership organisations) started running weekly practical workshops at the Key Theatre in the Spring of 2013. This led to a number of workshops and practice sessions taking place in the summer, as the aim was to create songs to be performed in Cathedral Square as part of Peterborough Festival in September 2013.
These workshops included instrumentalists, beat boxers, singers, rappers and music technology, of whom all collaborated to create 5 pieces of music. The workshops and sessions were led by Professional Musicians from London, Fraser Trainer and Paul Griffiths, with Rufus, Lee, Skilly Skillz. Xidus Pain and other musicians from Beat This and Britten Sinfonia helping and mentoring the young people. These workshops led to a very successful performance at Peterborough Festival in 2013!
Here’s a short video of one of the songs performed:

After a successful run of workshops and a great performance in Cathedral Square as part of Peterborough Festival 2013, The Beat Orchestra has been busy behind the scenes applying for funds to continue providing large scale music and performances for the youth of Peterborough. Thanks to Vivacity, The Garage and Peterborough Music Partnership, we’re glad to announce that the Beat Orchestra is back, oh and its FREE!
Whatever your preferred genre of music or ability. We are looking for Musicians, Producers, Singers, Rappers, Beat Boxers and instrumentalists aged 12-19, who are interested in making and performing music as a large ensemble, with the possibility of performing at the Key Theatre Young People’s takeover event in February, and at popular city events such as Willow Festival and the Peterborough Arts Festival)
The Beat Orchestra have recently held 2 meetings for young people. The meetings were held to
discuss the future of the project, what funds are available, how to gain interest from young people, what they would like to see for the future of the project etc, and a jam of course! As always we are looking for more young people aged 12-19 to be part of The Beat Orchestra. So if you or anyone you know would be willing to be part of this fantastic FREE project, come along to our next meeting after Christmas on Saturday 17th January @ Chime Creation Centre (Time TBC). We will be looking into creating a radio jingle promoting The Beat Orchestra, hopefully to be played out on Peterborough FM and BBC Radio Cambridgeshire, discussing the Orchestras future for 2015 and playing some music!
